History
Machh is a small town, located 60 KM southeast of Quetta city in the Pakistani province of Balochistan8. Machh has over 60 coal mines that attract thousands of coal mine workers from Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Afghanistan since its discovery during British rule9. Hazaras have a long history, since the British Raj, of working at coal mines in Machh which had resulted in small neighborhoods of Hazaras in Machh township.
Protest
The Hazaras staged a sit-in 19 in various parts of Quetta city. The protestors blocked the western bypass highway by placing the bodies on the road 20 21. The protestors demanded justice and the arrest of the perpetrators 22. The weather in Quetta falls below zero and protestors include women and children as well 23. The protest continued for six days and ended after their demands were met by Government24.
In support of the Hazaras, protests were staged in other cities, like Karachi, Lahore25, and Kargil 26.
Reaction and response

The condemnable killing of 11 innocent coal miners in Mach Balochistan is yet another cowardly inhumane act of terrorism. Have asked the FC to use all resources to apprehend these killers & bring them to justice. The families of the victims will not be left abandoned by the govt.
We are deeply saddened by the news that at least 11 coalminers lost their lives in a terrorist attack perpetrated in the Mach area of Balochistan today.

I want to reassure the Hazara families who lost their loved ones in a brutal terrorist attack in Machh that I am cogniscant of their suffering & their demands. We are taking steps to prevent such attacks in the future & know our neighbour is instigating this sectarian terrorism.
I share your pain & have come to you before also to stand with you in your time of suffering. I will come again very soon to offer prayers and condole with all the families personally. I will never betray my people’s trust. Please bury your loved ones so their souls find peace.

We have accepted all of their demands. [But] one of their demands is that the dead will be buried when the premier visits. I have sent them a message that when all of your demands have been accepted […] you don’t blackmail the prime minister of any country like this.
I am short of words to express my grief over the brutal killings of Hazara miners. This is not the first time that this has happened. But I hope it is the last. The whole country is in mourning. I request that PM @ImranKhanPTI meet with the victims’ families as soon as possible
